How to Trim a Tree

Ok, I know this blog is mainly for stuff about Cora...but I need help. Would someone please explain to my husband how to trim a tree??? I kid you not, he came inside on Sunday and said "I trimmed the tree". This is what I saw when I looked outside...

The tree is now 2 feet tall - THAT IS NOT TRIMMING!!! That is called CUTTING down the tree. Why do men do this?
